Burying the Dead

Welcome to my review for Burying the Dead: An Archaeological History of Burial Grounds, Graveyards and Cemeteries

Deep in the heart of North Yorkshire, at a place called Walkington Wold, there lies a rather unusual burial ground, an Anglo-Saxon execution cemetery

My thoughts
Rating: 4
Would I recommend it? Yes, in fact some of my friends have already added it to their wishlist.
Would I read more by this author?
Yes
First off I want to say huge  thank you to the publisher Pen & Sword , the author Lorraine Evans and to NetGalley for letting me request it as well as letting me read and review it, because as soon as I saw it on NetGalley I was like yes please because I love reading anything that deals with Archaeological History. And this book was everything I was hoping it would be , it was well researched and written, it was a gripping read from start to finish, and while it might not be for everyone, its perfect for the ones who love this type of book. It goes into detail of the types of burial as well as the history and the author has a way of bring it to life.
Deep in the heart of North Yorkshire, at a place called Walkington Wold, there lies a rather unusual burial ground, an Anglo-Saxon execution cemetery. Twelve skeletons were unearthed by archaeologists, ten without skulls, later examination of the skeletons revealed that their owners were all subjected to judicial execution by decapitation, one of which required several blows.

Similar fates have befallen other wretched souls, the undignified burial of suicides - in the Middle Ages, the most profound of sins - and the desecration of their bodies, go largely unrecorded. Whilst plague pits, vast cemeteries where victims of the Black Death were tossed into the ground, their bodies festering one on top of another, are only today betraying their secrets.

Although unpalatable to some, these burial grounds are an important part of our social heritage. They have been fashioned as much by the people who founded and used them, as by the buildings, gravestones and other features which they contain. They are records of social change; the symbols engraved upon individual memorials convey a sense of inherent belief systems, as they were constructed, adapted or abandoned depending on people’s needs.

Burying the Dead explores how these attitudes, practices and beliefs about death have undergone continual change. By studying the development of society’s funerary spaces, the author will reveal how we continue to reinforce our relationships with the dead, in a constant and on-going effort to maintain a bond with them.

Plus I love how their town always seems to be a heaven  for series killers , and the way the author writes about the town makes it sound like its a nice place but not a place I would want to either live or visit. Excerpt

Rian Falwell had a problem.

And that problem was currently staring at him through a messy tangle of black hair, from

beneath a brow dotted with gleaming beads of sweat that—beneath the glassy afternoon

light streaming through the windows—turned to glistening motes of amber against dusky

brown skin.

Honestly, if Damon Louis was going to come barging into Rian’s studio like this…

He could at least have the decency to wear a shirt.

The P.E. teacher took up far too much space inside the tiny cubicle of a studio, his

shoulders so broad they had almost touched both sides of the door frame as he’d stalked

inside. He looked as if he’d just stepped out of the gym, with his wide, sculpted, scar-rippled

chest glazed in a sheen of sweat and a pair of loose black track pants hanging off his

hips, the elastic waistband barely clinging to the narrow line cut below his iliac crest. His

shoulder-length tumbles of dark hair clumped together, completely drenched, droplets

dangling from the tips.

But as overheated as Damon looked?

His dark brown eyes were completely cold—glossed to reflective ice as he folded thick,

brawny arms over his chest and took a slow look around the cluttered space of Rian’s

studio.

Rian could track the line of his gaze—starting with the gloppy pile of clay on his pottery

wheel; a pile that would eventually become a vase, but right now was just misshapen lumps

of gray.

Then to the thin sheets of handmade papyrus parchment drying on a clothesline strung

across the room, pulped and pressed from the fallen early autumn leaves of the trees

around Albin Academy, an experiment Rian had been quite pleased with when it resulted in

fine paper with a green-gold translucent fragility, flecked with bits of brown from the leaves’

veins and stems.

Next, the many half-finished canvases propped about on their easels, slashed with angry,

bold strokes of paint in abstract designs.

The anatomical diagrams pinned to the walls.

And the extra large sketchbook left open on his worktable, displaying loose, light

sketches of male bodies in motion, focused on capturing the flow of sinew in the turn of the

waist, the tightening of an arm as it drew back, the extension of the body and curve of the

spine during a long, lazy reach.

Damon’s eyes lingered longest on that one, his dark, expressive brows rising fractionally,

almost mockingly—and Rian’s face burned.

All of these were his personal projects, all unfinished, but still things he put everything he

had into.

So why was this stone-faced, unsmiling jerk standing here looking over them like he was

about to assign Rian a failing score?

What was he even doing here at all?

Those dark brown eyes snapped back to him as if Damon had somehow heard the

question snarling in the back of Rian’s mind.

“So,” Damon drawled, and Rian realized this was the first time he’d actually heard Damon

speak in his three years at Albin Academy, rather than noncommittal affirmative mutters

during staff meetings. His voice was deep, raw, gritty, with a subtle pull to it that didn’t quite

seem to echo typical New England accents around Massachusetts. “I thought this was

some kinda broom closet. Chambers and Walden know you’re using it for…” He tilted his

head. A damp ripple of hair fell across the refined sharpness of his cheekbone, the tip

practically licking at the corner of his wide, full, stern-set mouth. “…this?”

Rian tensed.

More at the implied scorn dripping from this than at the fact he’d been…uh…

Caught using school grounds for unauthorized purposes.

He doubted Principal Chambers and Assistant Principal Walden would particularly care.

Especially when Rian had been using the storeroom as a studio since he’d been hired, and

no one had really noticed—though considering Lachlan Walden had only been hired last

semester, the assistant principal had more things to worry about than one rogue art teacher

moving a few brooms.

So Rian drew himself up, lifting his chin as he reached for the wet rag hanging from the

edge of his wheel and began wiping the thick patina of clay from his hands, peeling off the

cold, clinging layer.

“My broom closet,” he said firmly. “Attached to my classroom. I’m allowed to use it as I

deem necessary as long as it’s for educational purposes.”

This…counted…technically.

He was the art teacher.

Plus it also makes you question just how good is use of forensics and are there ways to make it better, so if you like a who done it, then you need to cheek this out for yourselves.

As soon as I saw the email from St.Martin's , I knew that I was going to read it and that I might actually like it , because of two things , 1 for those that don't know me I love reading historical fiction, 2 I love reading about WW 2 or events that took place doing that time ,3 thrillers are one if not my all time favorite genre and when you combined those three things then you have a winner and will definitely have my attention. And this had all of those things because its a historical fiction thriller that takes place doing WW 2.Not only that but the author was able to bring that time period to life as well as the character, he has a way of making you feel what his characters are going though and seen them come to life.

Germania: A Novel of Nazi Berlin
(Richard Oppenheimer #1)
by Harald Gilbers
From international bestselling author Harald Gilbers comes the heart-pounding story of Jewish detective Richard Oppenheimer as he hunts for a serial killer through war-torn Nazi Berlin in Germania.

Berlin 1944: a serial killer stalks the bombed-out capital of the Reich, preying on women and laying their mutilated bodies in front of war memorials. All of the victims are linked to the Nazi party. But according to one eyewitness account, the perpetrator is not an opponent of Hitler's regime, but rather a loyal Nazi.

Jewish detective Richard Oppenheimer, once a successful investigator for the Berlin police, is reactivated by the Gestapo and forced onto the case. Oppenheimer is not just concerned with catching the killer and helping others survive, but also his own survival. Worst of all, solving this case is what will certainly put him in the most jeopardy. With no other choice but to futher his investigation, he feverishly searches for answers, and a way out of this dangerous game.

First off I want to say huge  thank you to the publisher Carina Press-HARLEQUIN - Carina Press ,  the author Rhenna Morgan, and to NetGalley for inviting me to continue on with this series and letting me read and review it .This book had me hooked from the start and I thought my all time favorite male character was Kir ( from book 2 Hers to Tame ) but after reading this one I now think its Roman . This book had me laughing at some of the inter actions between Roman and  Bonnie and I loved the inter action Roman had between his brothers and their family, and there's just something about this author's writing that makes you fell in love with the story and her characters.

She’s in way over her head.

Bonnie Drummond is from the wrong side of the tracks, raised in a family of liars and criminals. No matter how hard she tries to stay on the straight and narrow, she always finds herself sucked back into the family drama, forced to sacrifice everything she’s earned to protect her family.

But this time they’ve gone too far—crossed the wrong people—and to save them she’ll have to put her life on the line.

Roman Kozlov, enforcer for a New Orleans mafiya family, is the poster child for the life Bonnie is struggling to escape. But he’s also as alluring as he is dangerous, and it doesn’t take long for their lives to begin to mesh.

With Roman, Bonnie finds the family she never had.

As their race for answers heats up, so too does the budding romance between them. And with danger nipping at her heels and love threatening her heart, Bonnie must come face-to-face with her past if she wants to have a future.

Would I read more by this author? Yes
First off I want to say huge  thank you to the publisher Grand Center Publisher  the author Lisa Regan for send me a copy of it to read and review , as well as helping to find a new series to read . This is the first time I've read anything by this author and I'm now hooked on this series so much so that I want to to read the rest of the series. It had everything I want and love in a mystery which is  drama, action, suspense, and a little bit of romance, and characters that I fell in love with right from the start,  As for the story itself its  Solid, well written, entertaining, and kept me wanting to know what was going to happening next, as well as kept me on the edge of my set though out the book so much so that I finished it in a day . And the secrets , just when I thought I knew them ,more kept coming and each was more darker than the last one. Other big win for me was the  that I loved the constant pace as well as the  interactions between the team and the way the story was told , in a way that you got to see what life was life for Josie in the past and the present. And it shows just how strong Josie is . With that said I can't wait to read more of this series .

Excerpt::

Mason “Monet” McCarthy had a problem.

She was five feet tall. Had curly red hair that was only fifty percent tamed under the best of conditions, and one hundred percent out of control this early in the morning. And she was sitting at

a table by the window watching the multicolored ships of the shrimp fleet as they rocked precariously with the wave action out near the horizon while her fingers absently fiddled with the corner of a book.

Oh, and she was also studiously ignoring him.

She was wicked good at that last part. Was making a frickin’ hobby of it, as a matter of fact. Not that he could blame her, considering what she’d offered him.

And what he’d turned down.

Her name was Alexandra Merriweather. Alex for short, which was a ridiculously masculine moniker for such a tiny wisp of a woman. One with skin like porcelain, eyes the color of Colombian emeralds, and a laugh as sweet and tinkling as a music box.

She was his problem because…well…he liked her. Like, liked her liked her. And if his cheating ho of a wife… Scratch that. Rewind… That would be his cheating ho of an ex-wife—had taught him anything, it was that he wasn’t fit to like a woman like Alex.

Not anymore.

All the years schlepping his ass through countless missions, maiming and killing in the name of the flag, had turned him into something…not normal.

That was the phrase Sarah had used when he came home early to surprise her for her birthday, but instead found her screwing his ex-best friend in their marriage bed. Surprise!

“What d’you expect, Mason?” Sarah’s expression had been so sincere. “You’re gone all the time, and when you’re here, you’re not normal.”

Copy that. When it came to a life of violence, the effects were biological, physiological, and psychological. It was the price of being a warrior.

So even though he’d been heartbroken by her betrayal, he’d never worked up much anger over it. Then and now, there was no way to deny the truth. Mason McCarthy was no longer capable of living an ordinary life with the house, the wife, and the two-point-three kids.

The only reason he was sitting in this hotel bar now, a bona fide civilian, was because of a deathbed promise he and the rest of his teammates had made to Rusty Lawrence, the eighth man in their SEAL unit. Barring that, Mason figured he would’ve kept on running and gunning until he found the bullet with his name on it.

With a fingertip, he traced the scrolling black letters inked on the inside of his left forearm. For RL they read. Picturing Rusty’s craggy face, he tried to determine whether to curse the sorry sonofabitch or thank him for forcing them all to make that vow and wave their fond farewells to the navy.

A call of “G’morning, asshole!” cut into his thoughts. Turning, he found Ray “Wolf” Roanhorse standing behind him.

Since he’d yet to determine how good the morning was or wasn’t, Mason grunted his reply. Wolf, used to Mason’s wordless responses, bent to scratch Meat’s exposed belly.

The fat English bulldog slept on his back beside Mason’s barstool, dick and balls on display for the entire breakfast crowd, and his snores nearly drowning out the cries of the seagulls coming in through the hotel’s open windows.

Meat was the only thing Mason had taken from the divorce. He’d let Sarah have their restored three-decker in Southie, along with the furniture and all the minutia that went with a “normal” life. But Meat? Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but he’d have crossed hell with nothing but a bucket of ice water before he’d let her keep his dog.

“A wise woman once said, ‘If you risk nothin’, you risk everythin’.’” With the unaffected ease that came with being supremely fit, Wolf settled himself onto the barstool next to Mason’s.

The two of them had become instant friends when they’d been teamed up as swim partners way back in BUD/S—Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL—training. And through all the intervening years, Wolf had never run out of inspirational quotes. He fancied himself a scholar of the world’s philosophers and religions.

There were times, including this one, when that could get damned annoying.

Instead of answering, Mason kept quiet. He hoped his silence conveyed his wish for more coffee and less talk.

“I said,” Wolf said louder, “a wise woman once—”

“First off,” Mason muttered irritably, “what part of this face”—he pointed to his scowling mug—“makes you think I’m in the mood for morning convo?”

“You’re never in the mood for conversation,” Wolf drawled, his Oklahoma accent making the words sound twice as long as they normally would. “Don’t matter what time of day it is.”

“Second off,” Mason went on as if Wolf hadn’t spoken, “what’s that supposed to mean anyway? If you risk nothing, you risk everything?”

“It means you should pull your head from your ass and go for it. Take her up on what she’s offerin’.” Wolf stuck a cocktail straw between his teeth and hailed the bartender to put in an order for a Bloody Mary. Hitching his chin toward Alex’s table, he added, “Come on, man. You know you want to.”

Mason hadn’t been kidding when he said he wasn’t in the mood to talk. But he sure as shit wasn’t in the mood to talk about Alex and her heart-stopping offer.
