The Silent Dolls

Title: The Silent  Dolls

Series:Detective Ellie Reeves #1

Author: Rita Herron

Genre: mystery thriller

Pub July 17,2020

Rating: 5

Silent tears trickle down her cheeks as she curls inside the tiny cave-like space. She lies on her side, darkness all around her, rubbing her fingers over the little wooden doll he’d carved. He told her to be quiet, not to cry or scream. Not to be a baby. Her throat was raw, her eyes swollen shut. She wanted her mommy and daddy. She wanted to go home.

When Penny Matthews, a seven-year-old girl with blonde curls and a gap-toothed smile, goes missing in the Appalachian mountains, Detective Ellie Reeves is called straight to the scene. According to Penny’s parents, their daughter vanished after a picnic by the creek. All that’s left behind is a pink friendship bracelet etched with “Penny”.

Ellie knows all too well that the mountains’ endless miles of dark forest and winding rivers are the perfect place for a criminal to hide. Racing against the rapidly setting sun and a brutal winter storm on the horizon, she searches desperately for Penny.

Special Agent Derrick Fox is determined to join the hunt. His younger sister, Kim, disappeared in the same area twenty-five years ago––on the day he was meant to be watching her. He’s certain the cases are linked and that over a dozen girls have vanished in the last decade. Ellie refuses to believe that their tight-knit mountain community could be home to a deadly criminal, but even she can’t deny the similarities in the cases. And when they discover the remains of a small body buried with a carved wooden doll, it’s clear they’re up against a deadly serial killer preying on innocent little girls.

As the temperature plunges, Penny’s life hangs in the balance. Most people who get lost in the woods never make it out alive. Can Ellie and Derrick defy the odds and find out the truth about all the stolen girls? Or will the mountain, and its twisted killer, claim another victim?

Would I read more by this author? Yes

This book had me hooked right from the start when it starts off with the prologue and after reading that i knew I had to keep reading  it, I didn't want to stop. It was everything I was hopping t would be dark and twisted in some was , fast pace but not to fast that it would lose you the read and the characters was well written to the point that they came alive on the page, and I loved how every time you think you had something figured out , then comes a long a twist that just throws you for a loop, and the more you read the more you seen to find out that there are secrets been kept from everyone and not just from the main character herself. As for the characters there was some I loved and are my favorites and some i was like what in the world is she is on, But over all my favorite ones kept win hands down. All I can say is that this is amazing start to a new series that I want to read, now I just have to wait for the second book. With that said I want to thank NetGalley as well as as Bookouture  for letting me read and review it and helping me find a new series to start.

A Midsummer Night's Demon,

The publisher has kindly asked me to let you know about this :

AN AUTHOR Q&A WITH ALEXA PIPER

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

A: Hi! My name is Alexa Piper, and I write paranormal romance. My first series is called Fairview Chronicles, which follows some very special individuals, supernatural and human, in their quest to make Fairview safer. They succeed, sometimes through sheer luck and force of will. I also recently started a second series called Dusk & Dawn, which is a little bit like an alternate history in which Vampires, Werewolves, and Fae exist and have made themselves know to humanity centuries ago, thus reshaping historical events and society as a whole. Sounds serious, I know, but it is a comedy. I have a few standalones out as well.

Q: Have you always written romance?

A: No! I started out with science fiction and fantasy which I still write, but I love romance. Writing a series with recurring characters is amazing, because it's not just the reader than wants and gets to spend more time with these people, I do as well. And I often try to make my stories funny, which is something I really love.

Q: Can you tell us what goes into writing a book for you? And how long does it take you to do so?

A: I can write fast, especially when I have a sense of the story and feel very passionate about it. I can and have finished books in a month or less. For the most part, I do research as needed. I'm not the kind of person that takes a trip to a museum or a different country to do research. I use the internet or pull from what I know. My focus is on letting the story manifest on the page as quickly as possible, mostly because I am curious myself about what will happen next. I might go back though and fill in details later.

Q: What are your favorite characters and love relationships to write?

A: Oh, boy. I think I like characters with edges. They should definitely have a sharp tongue, because I really enjoy banter. I like to write the kind of person that could talk me under the table. In terms of the love relationships, I'm not too picky. Many of my characters are queer, though not all of them. Life is colorful, and so is love.

Q: Pick one of your books and tell everyone why they should read it.

A: Okay, let me pitch you A Midsummer Night's Demon, my most recent book in the Fairview Chronicles. It has beautiful writing, action, demonic banter, and horny furniture. A lot of the demons are horny as well, but that goes without saying. Oh, and you will encounter wicked witches as well, be warned.

Genre: M/m Paranormal Romance

So if your looking for book that is nothing but craziness then check this one out, with that said I want to say think you to NetGalley for for letting me read it.

This is a first in a series that main character Kaite and her dog Cisco are home for good after doing  tours in Afghanistan. I should also note that the main character suffers from  suffering from anxiety and PTSD , so if you think that might be a trigger warning for some of you then you might want to pass this series by but if you think you can handle it then you have to check it out. Because if your looking for a story that doesn't let go , and the right from the start the characters (at least some of them) become your favorite, as well as the pace is fast and the more you read the more you want to see what happens next then this might just be for you, plus the main character Kaite comes off as a strong yet vulnerable female character who isn't going to let her PTSD overcome her and stop her from what she wants to do, so with that said said I want to thank NetGalley for letting me read and review it.

My thoughts

Would I recommend it? Yes

Would I read more by this author? Yes, in fact this is my 4th psychological thriller by since I've started reading her.

This sin't my first time reading this author as I said up above this this my fourth time reading her , so far I've read and loved.

The Babysitter

The Second Wife

The Marriage Trap

And all has been 5 stars for me, and now this one , it seems that I like going for her psychological thriller, and the darker the better. Man this didn't let me down at ll, it was everything I was hoping it would be and more. It was dark, and twisted, and the characters seemed to jump right off the page at you. Plus it also brought up some topics about dementia and Hemophilia,as for the story itself it had everything in that I love in a good dark and twisted thriller: Secrets, lies, betrayals, infidelity, mistrust, cons, revenge plots, chilling mind games, and by the time you get to the end of you won't be trusting anyone of them or even wanting to know them . With that said I want to thank NetGalley for letting me read and review it .

Talk about inconvenient. Not only did I have a dilapidated mansion and no money to repair it with, two cats I had no idea how to care for and a room full of cranky guests waiting for their breakfast, I also had a dead body on my hands.’

Josie Waters has to admit she may have acted a bit hastily when she agreed to purchase the Oyster Cove Guesthouse – a charmingly gabled Victorian mansion on the breathtaking Maine coast – from elderly family friend Millie Sullivan. But Josie was desperate to flee Ohio and in particular her ex-husband, a chef who loved his job so much he left her for it. And anyway, how hard can running a guesthouse be?

The truth is, Oyster Cove Guesthouse is a mouldering money pit with falling-in roof and a cohort of regular guests who are as mischievous as a litter of kittens. And Millie keeps dropping by to dispense unasked-for advice. And Josie might have made a mistake in promising to adopt Oyster Cove’s two resident cats Nero and Marlowe, and treat them in the manner to which they’ve become accustomed. Josie has never had a cat before… let alone two feisty felines who think they own the place.

Ok, it’s not going well. At least it can’t get any worse, Josie thinks. Until her first guest ends up dead.

My thoughts

Would I recommend it? Yes

Would I read more of this series ? yes , in fact I have books 2 and 3 to read.

Would I read more by this author? Yes, in fact I thing I've read her books before and liked them way better then this one.

For the first to a new series I'm not sure how I like it, I mean come on I know its a cozy mystery and I love them , their my go to books when I want to just get lost in a story but this one was slow form the start and i just couldn't get into it at times, because of how the main character acted. But I did like the story way better then I thought I would just not the main character. with that said I want to thank NetGalley for letting me read and review it

A high-stakes, pulse-pounding thriller from the bestselling author of Girl Last Seen.

My thoughts

Would I recommend it? Yes, in fact I've already talked about to some friends and

told them they need to check it out for themselves.

Would I read more by this author? Yes, in fact this is the second time I've read and loved this author, the first nook I read by her was The Starter Wife.

First off I want to thank Forever as well as Grand Central Publishing for send me a copy of it to read, as soon as I saw it on their news letter that they send out I told myself that the name sounding familial and it wasn't until I got the book that I realized that she wrote The Started Wife which I also got from them and had read last year and loved it , and it was also a 5 star rating. On a side note after reading this I'll never live in a smart house especially after reading this. Now on to what I thought : From the very start crazy stuff starts to happening to Cecelia, and you start to wounder what the heck is going on, is someone trying to make this poor woman crazy , or is she somehow doing this to herself,or is it all in her head. And no matter what she does nobody is or will listen to her. Another thing this story is brigs to life is how futuristic it was, how even today we use in our everyday life technology and are dependant on it.Which in some case can be good or bad, and the way the author used that aspect helps give this story a dark and twist concept that helps make this story creepy, so if your looking for a story that is non stop, full of dark and twisted secrets and won't let you go until the very end this is for you.

once again I was so glade to be back in the town of  Goosebush, Massachusetts and find out what Lilly and her friends was up to  and while this would be the perfect read for October , it was still the perfect read for me doing this time of craziness, because like all cozy mysterious I  tend to just read and get lost in the story and not pay attention to what is going on around me .And with this one I did just that , the story its self made me smile , and I loved seen the old characters and meeting new ones  and find out more about the history of the town and its people . Would I read more of this series? Yes, in fact I have book 2 to read and after reading this I can wait to get to it.

Would I read more by this author? Yes

This my read of this author and I do have to say even though I haven't read anything else by her after reading this I can't wait to read read her other stuff, I loved the characters, loved the craziness that Cat and her friend Gilley got into and I also liked how there was a character with ties to the LGTB community in it,One of the main things I loved was that even though Cat  was highly successful, and smart, she was also funny and sassy. And the reason I loved  Gilley,  was his sense of humort hat was out of this world , he just has a way to say something and your smiling .
All the characters are human and believable.Another thing I liked about it was that for a cozy mystery it also touched up on a hard topic that you don't see in cozy mysteries and that's bulling or even suicide ,which was brought up and talked about. As for the two new guys in Cats life where there's a problem I can't decode which one I would love to see her with . With that said I want to thank NetGalley for letting me read and review it , and I can't wait to read the next book to the series .

AMBUSH BEFORE SUNRISE by B.J. Daniels (on-sale May 19, 2020): Wrangler Angus Savage has come to

Wyoming to help Jinx McCallahan get her cattle to high country¬. He’s signed on for the dangerous

drive, eager to reconnect with the woman he knew when they were kids. Now in the wilderness the no-

nonsense cowboy and the strong-willed rancher must navigate the trail’s many hazards—like her

treacherous ex who wants her back…or dead.

Excerpt, AMBUSH BEFORE SUNRISE by B.J. Daniels (Intrigue)

JINX WATCHED ANGUS GO. She still hadn’t figured out why he seemed so familiar. Nor had he

said anything. She sighed and rose to take her dishes back to Max.

“I can take those for you,” Brick said, shooting to his feet.

She smiled but shook her head. “Stay here by the fire with Ella.” She was glad when he sat back

down. She needed to be alone. Brick was sweet and a good wrangler. He amused her with his blatant

attempts to charm her, but he was wasting his time. While he resembled his brother, they didn’t seem

to be anything alike. Angus was a mystery to her.

The more she was around him, the more she felt a strange sense that they’d been here before.

She couldn’t shake the feeling that she knew this man, as in another life. It was crazy. Sometimes she’d

find herself studying his face as if a memory was so close she could almost touch it.

“He’s handsome, isn’t he?” Max asked, startling her. She hadn’t realized that she’d reached the

chuck-wagon. Her mind had been miles away.

“Pardon?” she asked, turning to face him as she conjured up her most innocent face.

Max laughed. “You were staring at Angus Savage—and not for the first time, I might add.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I was…thinking.”

“Thinking? I can just imagine.” He turned back to his cooking.

She didn’t want to know what he’d imagined. Nor did she want to continue this conversation.

Still, she asked, “Have you ever run across someone you felt as if you knew in another life?”

He chuckled. “That your story?”

“I’m serious.”

Max turned to look at her. “I can see that. I suppose it’s possible the two of you met before.

Your mother and his were good friends.” The cook frowned. “I think she took you with her up to

Cardwell Ranch once years ago.” So that could have been it, she thought. “You don’t remember?”

She shook her head and yet as he said it, she had an image come to mind of mountains shooting

up from a green river bottom and a large red barn set against a wall of rock and pine trees. A memory

teased at her. “How old would I have been?”

“Eight or nine,” he said as he turned back to his cleaning up. “You didn’t stay long, just

overnight, I think. That’s probably why you don’t remember.”

But she did remember a little. Now it really nagged at her. It wasn’t just that she’d seen him before. She

couldn’t shake the feeling that something had hap-pened during that visit; she was sure of it.

She turned to look at Angus again. He’d rejoined his brother and cousin on a log by the fire. His

face shone in the campfire light. Max was right about one thing; the cowboy was handsome as sin. Had

he re-membered her? He would have been a little older than she was by a couple of years at least.

“Why don’t you just ask him?” Max said with a laugh. “Otherwise, it’s going to drive you crazy.”

He was right about that, as well, but what if Angus didn’t remember her? She’d feel foolish.

Then again, what if he did? What if he was just waiting for her to say something?

“While you’re making up your mind, why don’t you hand me your dishes?” Max said with a

shake of his head as he took them from her.

Leaving camp, she checked the cattle, glad that Brick and Royce had volunteered to take the first

shift. She didn’t expect trouble. Not tonight. T.D. was angry and vengeful, but he never planned ahead.

He knew she was taking the herd up into the high country for summer grazing today. Maybe he would

even wait until she returned to continue threatening her, rather than try to catch them. His laziness

might pay off for her.

But unfortunately, she also knew that her being up here in the mountains put her at a disadvantage. T.D.

wasn’t stupid. He would realize how vulnerable she was up here. Anything could happen in the

mountains on a cattle drive. People got injured. Others died. And T.D. was desperate to get his hands on

her ranch. He would come after her.

In the distance she heard a coyote howl. Another answered, then another. She was more

worried about wolves and bears, than coyotes. But she could only protect her herd so much. It was the

nature of the business.

The camp was quiet as she walked back toward the fire. From out of the dark shadows, she

spotted a lone figure still illuminated in the flames. Ella gave her a nod as she pulled up the log next to

her again. The heat of the blaze felt good this high in the mountains since it was only early June.

Jinx could feel the long day in the saddle in her muscles. She yearned for sleep, but it had been

hard to come by for some time now. It wasn’t just T.D. who haunted her dreams.

Would I recommend it: yes

Would I read more by this author ? yes

This is the third book by this author I've read and just like the last two times she didn't let me down, As soon as I started reading I got lost in the story and didn't wait to stop reading at all. Her characters came to life off the page and it it was like watching a movie with each turn of the page. I loved the inter action between Jinx and Angus  as well as between the interaction between her and the rest of the characters. Another thing I loved was that the romance was second to the rest of the story and that even though it was part of it , it didn't take anything away from it , that it was even slow burning which can some times be a bad thing but not in this story it worked really well.Over it was a good mix of suspense and romance . With that said I want to think the publishers as well as NetGalley for letting me read and review it .

Wow now this is like the Ruth Ware I love even though I've only read 3 of her books which are In A Dark Dark Woods ( which I loved ) ,The Death of Mrs. Westaway ( another one I loved) and sadly I picked up The Turn of the Key (which I didn't like at all that one didn't seem like her books it wasn't dark and twist like her other two was), so when I saw this one NetGalley I knew I wanted to read it and had to request it, because of three things: 1: the author, 2 the title , and three both the title and the synopsis that gives me vibes of a Agatha Christie's book And Then Then Was None, in some ways its like that but in others ways its different. The parts that reminds me of Then There IS None,is how a group of people come together in a place that is in a creepy setting , what more can be creepy then an rustic mountain chalet in winter where there is one way out if you need help, the other way it remind me of it is how it seemed everyone had secrets and not good ones at that, and one by one those secrets came out and things start to go bad, and I mean bad. Which brings up the question who can you trust, will they get out, who's doing this and why and how is help if any can make it in time to save them, and why is happening. With that said if you like And Then there was None then you have to check this one.A big win I would say, as well as a big thanks NetGalley for letting me read and review.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

For fans of Chanel Cleeton and Beatriz Williams, RED SKY OVER HAWAII is historical women's fiction set in the islands during WWII. It's the story of a woman who has to put her safety and her heart on the line when she becomes the unexpected guardian of a misfit group and decides to hide with them in a secret home in the forest on Kilauea Volcano.

The attack on Pearl Harbor changes everything for Lana Hitchcock. Arriving home on the Big Island too late to reconcile with her estranged father, all she can do is untangle the clues of his legacy, which lead to a secret property in the forest on Kilauea Volcano. America has been drawn into WWII, and amid rumors of impending invasion, the army places the islands under martial law. When they start taking away neighbors as possible sympathizers, Lana finds herself suddenly guardian to two girls, as well as accomplice to an old family friend who is Japanese, along with his son. In a heartbeat, she makes the decision to go into hiding with them all.

The hideaway house is not what Lana expected, revealing its secrets slowly, and things become even more complicated by the interest of Major Grant Bailey, a soldier from the nearby internment camp. Lana is drawn to him, too, but needs to protect her little group. With a little help from the magic on the volcano, Lana finds she can open her bruised heart to the children--and maybe to Grant.

A lush and evocative novel about doing what is right against the odds, following your heart, and what makes a family.

THE ROAD
December 8, 1941

WITH EVERY MILE CLOSER TO VOLCANO, THE FOG thickened, until they were driving through a forest of
white gauze with the occasional branch showing through. Lana considered turning the truck around no
less than forty-six times. Going back to Hilo would have been the prudent thing to do, but this was not a
time for prudence. Of that she was sure. She slowed the Chevy to a crawl and checked the rearview
mirror. The cage with the geese was now invisible, and she could barely make out the dog’s big black
spots.
Maybe the fog would be to their advantage.
“I don’t like it here at all,” said Coco, who was smashed up next to Lana, scrawny arms folded in
protest. The child had to almost yell to be heard above the chug of the motor.
Lana grabbed a blanket from the floor. “Put this over you. It should help.”
Coco shook her head. “I’m not cold. I want to go home. Can you please take us back?”
Goose bumps had formed up and down her limbs, but she was so stubborn that she had refused
to put on a jacket. True, Hilo was insufferably hot, but where they were headed—four thousand feet up
the mountain—the air was cold and damp and flimsy.
It had been over ten years since Lana had set foot at Kı¯lauea. Never would she have guessed to
be returning under these circumstances.
Marie chimed in. “We can’t go back now, sis. And anyway, there’s no one to go back to at the
moment.”
Poor Coco trembled. Lana wished she could hug the girl and tell her everything was going to be
okay. But that would be a lie. Things were liable to get a whole lot worse before they got any better.
“Sorry, honey. I wish things were different, but right now you two are my priority. Once we get
to the house, we can make a plan,” Lana said.
“But you don’t even know where it is,” Coco whined.
“I have a good idea.”
More like a vague notion.
“What if we don’t find it by dark? Are they going to shoot us?” Coco said.
Marie put her arm around Coco and pulled her in. “Turn off that little overactive imagination of yours.
No one is going to shoot us,” she said, but threw a questioning glance Lana’s way.
“We’ll be fine,” Lana said, wishing she believed that.
The girls were not the real problem here. Of greater concern was what they had hidden in the
back of the truck. Curfew was six o’clock, but people had been ordered to stay off the roads unless their
travel was essential to the war. Lana hadn’t told the girls that. Driving up here was a huge risk, but she
had invented a story she hoped and prayed would let them get through if anyone stopped them. The
thought of a checkpoint caused her palms to break out in sweat, despite the icy air blowing in through
the cracks in the floorboard.
On a good day, the road from Hilo to Volcano would take about an hour and a half. Today was
not a good day. Every so often they hit a rut the size of a whiskey barrel that bounced her head straight
into the roof. The continuous drizzle of the rain forest had undermined all attempts at smooth roads
here. At times the ride was reminiscent of the plane ride from Honolulu. Exactly two days ago, but felt
more like a lifetime.
Lana’s main worry was what they would encounter once in the vicinity of the national park
entrance. With the Kı¯lauea military camp nearby, there were bound to be soldiers and roadblocks in
the area. She had so many questions for her father and felt a mixed ache of sadness and resentment
that he was not here to answer them. How were you so sure the Japanese were coming? Why the
volcano, of all places? How are we going to survive up here? Why didn’t you call me sooner?

Coco seemed to settle down, leaning her nut-brown ringlets against her sister’s shoulder and
closing her eyes. There was something comforting in the roar of the engine and the jostle of the truck.
With the whiteout it was hard to tell where they were, but by all estimates they should be arriving soon.
Lana was dreaming of a cup of hot coffee when Coco sat upright and said, “I have to go tinkle.”
“Tinkle?” Lana asked.
Marie said, “She means she has to go to the bathroom.”
They drove until they found a grassy shoulder, and Lana pulled the truck aside, though they
could have stopped in the middle of the road. They had met only one other vehicle the whole way, a
police car that fortunately had passed by.
The rain had let up, and they all climbed out. It was like walking through a cloud, and the air
smelled metallic and faintly lemony from the eucalyptus that lined the road. Lana went to check on
Sailor. The dog stood up and whined, yanking on the rope around her neck, straining to be pet. Poor
thing was drenched and shaking. Lana had wanted to leave her behind with a neighbor, but Coco had
put up such a fuss, throwing herself onto her bed and wailing and punching the pillow, that Lana
relented. Caring for the girls would be hard enough, but a hundred-and-twenty-pound dog?
“Just a bathroom stop. Is everyone okay back here?” she asked in a hushed voice. Two low
grunts came from under the tarp. “We should be there soon. Remember, be still and don’t make a
sound if we stop again.”
As if on cue, one of the hidden passengers started a coughing fit, shaking the whole tarp. She
wondered how wise it was to subject him to this long and chilly ride, and if it might be the death of him.
But the alternative was worse.
“Deep breaths…you can do it,” Lana said.
Coco showed up and hopped onto the back tire. “I think we should put Sailor inside with us. She
looks miserable.”
“Whose lap do you propose she sits on?” Lana said.
Sailor was as tall as a small horse, but half as wide.
“I can sit in the back of the truck and she can come up here, then,” Coco said in all seriousness.
“Not in those clothes you won’t. We don’t need you catching pneumonia on us.”
They started off again, and ten seconds down the road, Sailor started howling at the top of her
lungs. Lana felt herself on the verge of unraveling. The last thing they needed was one extra ounce of
attention. The whole idea of coming up here was preposterous when she thought about it. At the time it
had seemed like a good idea, but now she wondered at her sanity.
“What is wrong with that dog?” Lana said, annoyed.
Coco turned around, and Lana felt her hot breath against her arm. In the smallest of voices, she
said, “Sailor is scared.”
Lana felt her heart crack. “Oh, honey, we’re all a bit scared.
It’s perfectly normal under the circumstances. But I promise you this—I will do everything in my
power to keep you out of harm’s way.”
“But you hardly know us,” Coco said.
“My father knew you, and you knew him, right?” Lana said. “And remember, if anyone asks, we
tell them our story.”
They had rehearsed it many times already, but with kids one could never be sure. Not that Lana
had much experience with kids. With none of her own and no nieces or nephews in the islands, she felt
the lack palpably, smack in the center of her chest. There had been a time when she saw children in her
future, but that dream had come and gone and left her sitting on the curb with a jarful of tears.
Her mind immediately went to Buck. Strange how your future with a person could veer so far off
course from how you’d originally pictured it. How the one person you swore you would have and hold
could end up wreaking havoc on your heart instead. She blinked the thought away.

As they neared Volcano, the fog remained like a curtain, but the air around them brightened.
Lana knew from all her time up here as a young girl that the trees got smaller as the elevation rose, and
the terrain changed from towering eucalyptus and fields of yellow-and-white ginger to a more cindery
terrain covered with red-blossomed ‘ohi‘a trees, and prehistoriclooking ha¯pu’u ferns and the crawling
uluhe. At one time in her life, this had been one of her happiest places. Coco reached for the letter on
the dashboard and began reading it for the fourth time. “Coco Hitchcock. It sounds funny.” The paper
was already getting worn.
Marie swiped it out of her hands. “You’re going to ruin that. Give it to me.”
Where Coco was whip thin and dark and spirited—a nice way of putting it—Marie was blonde
and full-bodied and sweet as coconut taffy. But Lana could tell even Marie’s patience was wearing thin.
“Mrs. Hitchcock said we need to memorize our new names or we’ll be shot.”
Lana said as calmly as she could, “I never said anything of the sort. And, Coco, you have to get
used to calling me Aunt Lana for now. Both of you do.”
“And stop talking about getting shot,” Marie added, rolling her eyes.
If they could all just hold it together a little bit longer.
There was sweat pooling between her breasts and behind her kneecaps. Lying was not her
strong suit, and she was hoping that, by some strange miracle, they could sail on through without
anyone stopping them. She rolled her window down a couple of inches for a burst of fresh air. “We’re
just about here. So if we get stopped, let me do the talking. Speak only if someone asks you a direct
question, okay?”
Neither girl said anything; they both just nodded. Lana could almost see the fear condensing on
the windshield. And pretty soon little Coco started sniffling. Lana would have said something to comfort
her, but her mind was void of words. Next the sniffles turned into heaving sobs big enough to break the
poor girl in half. Marie rubbed her hand up and down Coco’s back in a warm, smooth circle.
“You can cry when we get there, but no tears now,” she said.
Tears and snot were smeared across Coco’s face in one big shiny layer. “But they might kill
Mama and Papa.” Her face was pinched and twisted into such anguish that Lana had to fight back a sob
of her own.
